Essential Dos and Don’ts for OFWs in Saudi Arabia: A Practical Survival Guide for Overseas Workers

Working in Saudi Arabia offers many opportunities for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), but it also comes with unique cultural and legal expectations. Understanding the local customs and laws is essential to ensure a safe and respectful experience.

DOs: What You Should Do

1. Dress Modestly

Saudi Arabia values modest attire. Men should wear long pants and shirts with sleeves, while women are expected to wear an abaya and cover their hair in public.

2. Respect Religious Practices

Be mindful of prayer times, which occur five times daily. During the holy month of Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours.

3. Understand Your Employment Rights

Ensure you have a written employment contract outlining your job responsibilities, salary, and benefits. You're entitled to one rest day per week and overtime pay for extra hours worked.

4. Carry Proper Identification

Always have your Iqama (residence permit) with you, as it's required for identification and accessing services.

5. Maintain Professional Conduct
Be punctual, respectful, and dedicated in your work. Professionalism is highly regarded in Saudi workplaces.

DON’Ts: What to Avoid

1. Avoid Public Displays of Affection

Holding hands, hugging, or kissing in public is considered inappropriate and can lead to legal consequences.

2. Do Not Bring Prohibited Items

Alcohol, pork products, and religious items like crucifixes or Bibles are banned. Possession can result in severe penalties.

3. Avoid Using the Left Hand for Social Interactions

In Saudi culture, the left hand is considered unclean. Use your right hand for eating, greeting, and giving or receiving items.

4. Do Not Photograph People Without Permission

Taking photos of individuals, especially women, without consent is disrespectful and can lead to legal issues.

5. Avoid Criticizing the Government or Religion

Publicly expressing negative opinions about the Saudi government or Islam is illegal and can result in imprisonment or deportation.
